Secrets, lies and stereo dives spark mayhem in Players Circle Theater’s production of ‘Rumors’
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Neil Simon’s “Rumors” is a trusted, tried-and-true comedic gem, and Players Circle Theater’s latest production proves why this farce continues to delight audiences decades after its debut.
Under the confident direction of Robert Cacioppo, the show delivers two hours of laugh-out-loud mayhem, carried by an ensemble of veteran actors who know exactly how to land every punchline and blow.
From the moment theatergoers step into the space, the elaborate set makes a bold statement. Designed to resemble a tastefully appointed townhouse in an upscale 1980s New York neighborhood, the setting reflects the play’s high-society satire.
The townhouse belongs to the Deputy Mayor of New York, Charlie Brock, who has apparently shot himself, though, fortunately, it’s only a flesh wound to the ear.
This bizarre incident sets off a cascade of misunderstandings, cover-ups, and comic chaos as four couples attempt to keep the situation under wraps.
The first to arrive are Chris and Ken Gorman, played by Lauren Elizabeth Reed and Steven Coe, whose frantic attempts to conceal the accidental shooting kick-off the hilarity. They are soon joined by Carrie Lund Cacioppo and Frank Blocker as Claire and Lenny Ganz, a pair whose suspicious curiosity adds to the escalating tension and laughter.
As more guests arrive including Ricky Pope and Kelly Jo Madoian as Ernie and Cookie Cusack, and AJ Mendini and Eliazbeth D’Aiuto as Glen and Cassie Cooper, the web of rumors grows ever more tangled.
Each performer brings sharp timing and vivid personality to the stage, creating a believable group of eccentric, socially frazzled New Yorkers.

The chemistry among the cast is undeniable, and the physical comedy is executed with precision, particularly a scene where Lund-Cacioppo hilariously rolls across the floor to turn on a stereo, earning hearty laughs from the audience. A scene I can’t forget.
Cacioppo’s direction keeps the pace brisk and the energy high. Every door slam, double-take, and half-truth builds seamlessly into a comic confusion. Beneath the laughter lies Simon’s timeless commentary on status, secrets, and the absurd lengths people still go to protect appearances.
“Rumors” at Players Circle Theater is a first-rate production that delivers exactly what audiences crave: a smart, fast-paced farce that leaves everyone grinning long after the lights go down. If you’re looking for an evening of pure laughter, this show deserves a spot on your calendar.
