Gulf Coast News Review: ‘My Way: A Musical Tribute To Frank Sinatra’
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Have you ever wanted to step back in time, to walk into a smoke-filled cabaret, settle in with a drink, and listen to some big-band swing?
Players Circle Theatre has transformed its space into an intimate, mid-century-style cabaret, complete with table seating and a terrific jazz trio, as four of the theatre’s best performers celebrate the music of Frank Sinatra.
With a drink in hand, you’ll hear roughly 50 unforgettable Sinatra classics, including “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “Witchcraft,” and, of course, “New York, New York,” just to name a few.
Ted Wioncek III has a beautiful, Sinatra-like voice and, as always, is a pleasure to watch. He shares the stage with his beautiful and talented wife, Kimberly Suskind, who has a pure, sweet voice of her own. She even surprises the audience with a delightful little tap number that was unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable.
AJ Mendini delivers many of the show’s great songs while adding his trademark comedy, keeping the audience laughing and the mood light. Ruthgena Faraco gives the production a genuine jazz feel with her rich, soulful voice.
And the orchestra is terrific. Music Director Drew Scott leads the ensemble, joined by Tim Torres on bass and Josue Gallardo on drums. Together, they create the musical backdrop that makes this production feel much bigger than a simple theatre performance.
But this show is more than entertainment; it’s an experience.
Throughout the performance, television screens help tell the story of Ol’ Blue Eyes, while the four performers occasionally step out of character to share stories, facts, and even some of Sinatra’s philosophy. It gives the audience a chance to appreciate not only the music but also the man behind it.
There is traditional theatre seating, but if you’re going, I highly recommend trying to book a table. I sat in a theatre seat and found myself envious of those sitting at the tables. The table seating really adds to that authentic cabaret atmosphere.
If you love the idea of stepping into a sophisticated, mid-century lounge, this production brings that smoky, late-night vibe to life, right here on historic McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers. So, there is no need to travel to Las Vegas.
The fast-paced, high-energy production runs for about 90 minutes, and, honestly, it seems much shorter.
“My Way: A Musical Tribute To Frank Sinatra” runs through August 30. Tickets are available online here or through the Players Circle Theatre box office at 239-800-3292.
If you love Sinatra, jazz, or simply want to spend an evening somewhere that feels like you’ve stepped into another era, this is one worth seeing.
Players Circle Theater is located at 13211 McGregor Blvd, Fort Myers. For more information, call 239-800-3292.
