Gulf Coast Theater Review: ‘Oklahoma! In Concert’ at Players Circle Theater in Fort Myers
FORT MYERS, Fla. — If you’re looking for some good old-fashioned musical fun, “Oklahoma! In Concert” at Players Circle on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers is the place to be.
This isn’t just a play, it’s a celebration of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s very first musical, and what a treat it is.
Featuring an Oscar and Pulitzer Prize-winning score, the production showcases timeless favorites like “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'” and “Oklahoma” in a vibrant performance led by pianist Ricky Pope, soloists, and a full chorus.
The story, set in Oklahoma in 1906, follows the romance between a cowboy and a farm girl while highlighting the tensions between cowboys and local farmers.
The cast assembled for this concert is a star-studded lineup of Players Circle favorites and rising talents.
The cast really makes this concert special. Lexi Rae Smith shines as Laurey with a voice that is nothing short of stunning and soaring, almost operatic at times.
Ted Wioncek III delivers a gripping performance as Jud Fry, especially in his haunting rendition of “Lonely Room.”
AJ Mendini brings warmth and charisma to Curly, matched by his strong vocals, while Kimberly Suskin is a delight as the spirited Ado Annie. Susan Dohan Chidester rounds out the principal cast with charm as Aunt Eller.
And let’s not forget the younger ensemble, as they add energy and excitement that makes the whole production feel alive and full of joy, adding heart to the production.
Together, this cast turns the iconic score into a joyful and heartfelt experience, one that is both nostalgic for longtime fans and exciting for newcomers.
Overall, “Oklahoma! In Concert” is down-home fun with a cast that clearly loves what they’re doing. It’s the kind of show that leaves you humming on your way out the doors of Players Circle Theater.
The performance runs through Aug. 31, and there were very few seats left empty at Sunday’s matinee. I’m sure they’ll be in hot demand as word of this pure theatrical joy spreads.
