Psychological thriller ‘The Business of Murder’ keeps audiences guessing at Players Circle Theater in Fort Myers
FORT MYERS, Fla. — If you’re looking for a good psychological thriller then you may want to make plans to head to Players Circle Theater along McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers.
This tiny theater isn’t afraid to tackle some challenging shows and as usual they pull it off. “The Business of Murder” is a thriller play by Richard Harris, first performed in 1977.
This story revolves around a seemingly straightforward murder mystery centered on revenge but with twists and complex characters that keep the audience guessing about a triangular relationship between Dee, a TV playwright, Hallet, a detective and Mr. Stone, a humorless almost psychotic bizarre man.
Warning: The show does have a slow start, so I implore you stick with it, and it will make more sense as it unfolds. It’s important to pay attention early.
Mr. Stone (Thomas Marsh) is concerned about his son after he arrives home unexpectedly, frightened by an unwise decision.
He calls on a no-nonsense police superintendent, Hallett (Scot Cooper), who has come to Mr. Stone’s apartment for a chat.
TV Playwright Dee (Chloe Elliott-Chan) enters Stone’s flat, having accepted an invitation to discuss a script by Stone’s wife, who much to her surprise is already dead.
This show is anchored by strong performances from the three-person cast, who expertly navigate the shifting power dynamics and reveal layers of manipulation that keep the audience following along.
While the single setting is functional, the play’s strength truly lies in its sharp dialogue and the suspenseful unraveling of secrets, making for an engaging evening of theatrical intrigue.
All three actors are completely absorbed in their characters and deliver intense dramatic and engaging scenes which holds the audience interest.
This is one of those shows that is better seen than read about and I don’t want to give away the whole plot, so you may want to grab tickets to experience it for yourself and you have a few more days to that as the show runs through May 11th.
